None were left in the gutter after Year 7 students at Barton Court Grammar School participated in fund-raising Bowling matches this Summer. The students collectively managed to raise £2,300 which will be donated to the RSPCA, Kent Wide Downs Syndrome Charity (KWDSG) and Cancer Research UK . This event included students from the youngest year in the school, who were sponsored on their event.
Students collected sponsorship from relatives and friends individually and managed to raise this impressive amount from the event which took part on the 24th May at Ashford AMF Bowling Centre. Joint Year 7 Pastoral Managers, Miss King and Miss Bernard, from the school helped to organise the event, with the pupils choosing which charities the funds would be donated to. The highest amount raised by one student was the £246. Co-organiser Miss King said that ‘We chose a bowling event because they have been successful with younger students in previous years at Barton Court ' and added ‘It was nice to treat the students after their end of year exams'.
At the bowling centre there was a multitude of competitive souls vying for a prestigious victory…and this was only in the teachers' lane! Teaching staff including Mr Hayes, Mr Plowman, Mr Gauthier, Mrs Macrae and Miss King and Miss Bernard themselves took part in this clash of the titans. The students also bowled in their friendship groups, and all tried their best to achieve a strike whilst enjoying the occasion. However, there was only to be one winner in this event…and that was the charities who received the generous donations from the sponsors of the Year 7 students.
Sarah Kent from KWDSG and Margaret Ridley from Cancer Research UK came to Barton Court to meet some of the students who helped raise money for the charities.
It's clear that the children enjoyed their trip immensely and it was a fun way to end their time as Year 7 students, as they progressed to Year 8 in June. The event was a great success with both the charities and students making the most of the opportunity to have fun and give generously. Such events are becoming a regularity at Barton Court , and if this one is anything to go by, there will be many more in the future.
